The Dynamic Duo of Nerdy Entertainment

Starting in 2013, Netflix shook up reality with the Marvel Cinematic Universe leaving some of us drooling for more.

Taking a long gander in the mirror, my heart has been forever stollen by the MCU. It started with Netflix’s Iron First starring, Finn Jones aka Danny Rand. Granted, I am aware of the commentary for the first season of Iron Fist yet I was still entranced by the level of emotion put into the show. After watching Iron First I moved to the first season of Luke Cage and my love for these series progressed. I binged watched both seasons of Jessica Jones (in my opinion is competing with Dare Devil for my favorite MCU Netflix Series) and then binged watched Dare Devil.

So here are my three reasons why I was hooked on the Marvel series:

1. Firstly, character development. Everyone loves amazing character development. Am I right or am I right? However, I felt as though every time I watched a different series I set out on  different adventure with these characters. Let’s take Danny Rand for instance, he didn’t know who he was and desired to discover more about his parents as well as his birth rights. Sure, I get it. You leave Kun’ Lun, the only place that truly feels like home to learn more about who Danny Rand is. We as watchers, have no actual ties to these character (or actors), but somehow we feel obligated to know how they become who they are with or with out the powers they had obtained. Luke Cage, he escapes prison after undergoing experimentation, goes to New York for what? A sense of peace? Exploration? Understanding of himself? No, he fell in love with Reva (psychologist that helped him receive the super strength and bulletproof skin) and moved there for her. Just an FYI, WATCH THESE IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER!! I watched Jessica Jones after I watched Luke Cage S1 and realized what actually happened to Reva. If I would have watched them in order I wouldn’t have been so confused.
2. Secondly, of course I was hooked to the character development and how they grew overtime, but I was also completely locked into the cycle. When I actually started to watch them in order everything that was missing started to fill in the blanks. When Luke Cage S2 came out I was eager to watch it so I turned it on and immediately saw that Misty Knight didn’t have an arm. Well, I couldn’t continue watching the series if I don’t know what happened to her arm which then led me to, The Defenders. Everything in these series is circular not solely because they’re in the same city or because they all have superpowers, but because they all pretty much rely on each other (in their own ways). This was exemplified in Luke Cage S2 when Danny Rand make his guest appearance for one episode. Claire was worried about Luke and asked Danny to help him essentially find his ‘chi’. Unfortunately for Luke he took a turn down a road he might not ever be able to come back from. NO, there aren’t going to be any real spoilers in this blog just some basic information anyone could find online with the right researching.
3. Lastly, every single character had a crazy, unbelievable past that threw them down this speeding rabbit hole habitually causing them to either become justice itself or tag along with the ones causing them to eventually live a Hell on Earth type of lifestyle. Dare Devil wanted you to feel the darkness, the void, the emptiness that surrounded him. Luke Cage prayed on becoming a vigilante, but instead became someone he might not even know anymore. I didn’t connect the dots until a teacher told me something the Joker had stated, “Superhero’s are one bad day from becoming super villains”. I believe this is what happened to Luke. He was so caught up on beating Mariah that he might actually become her. Mariah set him up with giving him the club because she knew he wouldn’t turn it down. Luke desired to be on top instead of watching everything crumble beneath him. The anger each of these character possess ultimately turns them mad, except for Jessica Jones because she’s already mad. The crazy part is Jessica might be the only one to actually have a sane thought process even after facing Kilgrave. The amazing part about her is how she will never allow anyone to play on her mind after that. She knows when someone is bullshitting their way out of something or when it is just bullshit. She calls it like she sees it and I’m curious to know how she would feel when/if she found Luke Cage standing where Mariah Dillard/Stokes stood. Well, she would probably drown herself in booze and then ask him the questions he didn’t want to answer himself. Each character made their way into my big ol’ heart and stampeded all around it. I crave to know more and where their stories are going to lead them, but for now I’ll rewatch the series and wait for Dare Devil 3, Luke Cage 3 and hopefully Jessica Jones 3.
