It’s All About the Passion!

Out the door at 3:00 am! 3 hrs of sleep, UGH! That has been my day so far. Sitting on this crowded plane, unable to sleep, I look around to see so many different types of people, so many different backgrounds. I can’t help but wonder what type of nerd each person is. How do I know they are all nerds?

Almost everyone is a nerd about something. Do you love sports so much you play in fantasy leagues? You are a sports nerd! Do you love cars so much that you talk about them every chance you get? You are a car nerd! I personally am a nerd of more things than I can count (but that is a subject for a different day).

But where does it start? What is that moment that bridges us from being generally interested in something to becoming a nerd about it? For me, I think I was never really a ‘nerd’ about anything until I turned 18 and was on my own. It was the moment I realized that I didn’t want to let go of the last of my childhood toys, but instead wanted to go out and rebuy all of the ones I had already let go.

I have such strong memories of playing with and collecting action figures that I started really getting back into them as an adult. I started combing eBay and flea markets looking for anything from He-Man to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and even little McDonalds toys that I remember once having.

Honestly that really bridged me into new realms of nerd. My collections and passion for the intellectual properties I was collecting from, struck up new friendships and introduced me to people who showed me even MORE cool things that I became nerdy about…and for me, that is a snow ball that will probably never stop rolling 🙂
