As we’re entering the new year, it also means a brand new slate of films are coming our way. Some of which we’ve already begun seeing advertising for and some of which are still in development. 2019 was, in my humble opinion, the best year of film no doubt, but 2020 has some sleepers that could very well compete. I don’t know about you, but I shiver with antici…
So here are my picks for the 20 Most Anticipated Films of 2020.
#20 – Promising Young Woman: An interesting premise about a girl getting revenge for a sexual assault. It has PC agenda written all over it. I can’t wait to see it and love it just to watch insecure males cry about it all over Reddit.
#19 – Trolls World Tour: I admit it, I’m a big fan of the Troll movies. Don’t know why, can’t explain it, but since they’re adding the power of ROCK to their slate of adorable characters, I’m all in for it. Let’s Shred!
#18 – Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn: This looks like the weirdest, craziest, most psychotic movie of the year, and if it’s not, I’m going to be sorely disappointed.
#17 – The Woman in the Window: Horror movies always get me excited, but combine that with what looks like a prestigious performance by Amy Adams and I’m definitely in. This looks creepy, intense and terrifying. Hope it lives up to the hype.
#16 – Onward: Animation needs a win guys, and Chris Pratt and Tom Holland are here to deliver. A brotherly road trip with mystical powers, what could possibly go wrong? Nothing. This is gonna be so right.
#15 – Coming 2 America: Not gonna lie there is a lot of apprehension on my part for this one. The movie is about 30 years too late, and I highly doubt they’ll be able to recapture the magic of the original, but we’ll see. Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes did exceptionally well together in Dolemite Is My Name, and I only have high hopes for this as well.
#14 – Raya and the Last Dragon: At D23, Disney revealed their slate for their longest standing division and one of the films was Raya and the Last Dragon. We’re still not sure what the film is about or how it will look, but it’s rare for Disney animation studios to put out something they don’t totally believe in.
#13 – Venom 2: The second entry into Sony’s antihero franchise is due out soon this time with legendary producer, actor, director, Andy Serkis at the helm. The last film left us with a teaser of Carnage, and we’re only hoping we get to see the full vision realized in this second film. Venom was a surprising hit in 2018, will the sequel be able to up the ante?
#12 – Soul: Disney plans to dominate this year once again after securing 7 (Yes, seven) billion dollar films in 2019. We’ve traveled in people’s minds, through their emotions, and now Disney will get deep down into your soul, and you know what they’ll find? Everything.
#11 – No Time To Die: Daniel Craig is back in what looks like his final appearance as James Bond. The trailer for this movie looks absolutely sleek, sharp and sexy. The additions of Ana De Armas, Lashana Lynch and Rami Malek probably add to that feeling, but we can’t help but get excited for this intense send-off to one of the best bonds we’ve ever seen.
#10 – Bad Boys For Lif3: Finally, it only took some 20 years, but we’re finally getting the 3rd installment of Bad Boys. I don’t know why these movies take so long to make, they’ve obviously got a die-hard fan base that craves them, and this one looks to be overly action packed and filled with humor. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another 10 years for Bad Boys 4 Ever.
#9 – Antebellum: I have NO idea what this movie is gonna be about. But the cinematography has me hooked. Janelle Monae is leading this film and every shot we’ve seen from the trailer looks like a mix between horror and history. We’re definitely intrigued.
#8 – Tenet: Sometimes all a movie has to have is the right people’s names attached to it. That’s the case with Tenet. Christopher Nolan is directing, John David Washington is starring, alongside Robert Pattinson. And we’re clearly mixing with the time-space continuum, but that’s all we know for now, and so far that’s all we need.
#7 – Candyman (2020): Listen, as a child, I watched Candyman. No other horror movie to this day has terrified me more than that film. Even now, I can’t sit through it. It’s that horrifying. That’s a high bar that Jordan Peele has set for himself. Slasher horrors are always my favorite horror films, but he’s got his work cut out for him. I’m definitely rooting for him.
#6 – Black Widow: The MCU lives! Phase 4 will officially be underway with the prequel Black Widow film. I admit, I wanted this film much sooner to focus on the events of Natasha’s past and how she met up with Hawkeye and possibly, what happened in Budapest, but this one will take place in between Civil War and Infinity War. It’ll give us some insight into her decision in Endgame but more importantly, open some doors we thought may have been closed.
#5 – The Rhythm Section: Blake Lively has never looked as good or as dangerous as she looks in this trailer. Her character is out for revenge, and I desperately hope she gets it.
#4 – Wonder Woman 84: The first trailer has left me with more questions than answers: How did Steve Trevor come back? When will we see Kristen Wiig as Cheetah? And is she really swinging from lightning bolts? This movie looks sick. Patty Jenkins returns as director and I can only hope ‘84 exceeds what the first one did, and so far, looks good.
#3 – The Eternals: If you are not a die-hard comic book fan, The Eternals is going to surprise you. It is a fully immersive story experience that will take the MCU to places it hasn’t been before. The cast of this movie is ridiculous: Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani, to name a few. What is going to happen in this movie, I have no idea. Will it be one of the best movies of the year? Yeah, I’m pretty solid on that.
#2 – In The Heights: Lin-Manuel Miranda is one of the greatest living artists of our time right now and his first Broadway musical is set to hit theaters. I sat through In The Heights countless times on stage and it is one of the best Broadway musicals in years, matched only by his most recent show, Hamilton. Which he also hope becomes a feature-length film someday as well.
And before I reveal my #1 pick for the most anticipated film of 2020, here are a few honorable mentions we think will definitely be ones to check out in the coming year.

And here is my #1 most anticipated movie of 2020….
#1 – MULAN:
Like I said, Disney is going to dominate for another year straight, and one of the main reasons will be this movie. Mulan is second only to The Lion King in my heart of the greatest Disney animated movies of all time, and with a reported budget of $300 million, Disney looks to capitalize off of their 2019 success. This film looks rich, colorful, true to its origin, and if I do say so myself, BADASS. I not only expect Mulan to be a success, I expect it to be a critical and commercial favorite for the year. That’s some high expectation, but there’s no reason why it won’t reach it.
And there you have it folks, 20 reasons to have a happy and safe new year, so you can enjoy what will undoubtedly be another incredible year of film. We’ll see if these films hold up as the year goes on or if something unexpected sneaks up on us in 2020.
